Bases Curriculares

State Standards Initiative

Chile's national curriculum framework, issued by the Ministry of Education and approved by the National Education Council, defining the learning objectives every subsidized and public school must teach at each grade level from early childhood through secondary education. Introduced in stages beginning in 2012 for secondary and progressively extended, it replaced the older Marco Curricular and organizes objectives around subject-specific skills, knowledge and attitudes rather than a fixed syllabus of content, leaving pedagogical method to individual schools.

FAQs

Who decides what goes into the Bases Curriculares, and what can the National Education Council change?

Only the Ministry proposes changes; the Council can approve, object to or reject them but cannot write the curriculum.

Only the Ministry of Education can propose or change the Bases Curriculares. The National Education Council reviews each proposal and can approve it, raise reasoned observations, or reject it. The Council cannot create or remove school subjects or decide which topics belong in the curriculum. Review runs in two stages with deadlines set in law. In the first the Council approves the proposal or raises observations, which the Ministry may accept or not, with reasons. In the second the Council can approve the proposal, or reject it if it judges its observations were not taken up. After a rejection the Ministry can submit a new proposal and the process repeats.
