Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Training Evaluation

Adult and Lifelong Learning Theories

Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Training Evaluation is a framework for judging how effective a training program is, developed by Donald Kirkpatrick out of his 1954 doctoral dissertation and first published to a wider audience in 1959. It evaluates training at four levels: Reaction, the degree to which participants find the training favorable, engaging and relevant to their jobs; Learning, the degree to which they acquire the intended knowledge, skill, attitude, confidence and commitment; Behavior, the degree to which they apply what they learned once back on the job; and Results, the degree to which the training's targeted outcomes actually occur. Kirkpatrick popularized the model further in his 1994 book Evaluating Training Programs.

FAQs

Has anyone proposed adding a fifth level to Kirkpatrick's four levels?

Yes: JJ Phillips proposed a Return on Investment level, and Roger Kaufman proposed a fifth level on impact on external clients and society.

Yes. According to the Wikipedia article on Donald Kirkpatrick, several authors have suggested adding a fifth level of evaluation. JJ Phillips argued for a Return on Investment level, which compares the fourth level of the standard model, Results, with the overall costs of training. Roger Kaufman argued instead that return on investment is essentially a Level 4 type of evaluation, because it is still internal to the organization, and that a fifth level should focus on the impact of the organization on external clients and society.
