Dorothy Heathcote MBE (1926-2011) was a British drama teacher and academic whose work at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne reshaped how drama is used across the school curriculum, not only in dedicated theatre classes. Appointed a staff tutor at the Durham Institute of Education in 1951 and later a full-time lecturer at Newcastle from 1964 until her retirement in 1986, Heathcote developed teacher in role, a method in which the teacher steps into a character within a dramatic scenario to guide pupils' learning from inside the fiction rather than by direct instruction. She also devised mantle of the expert, an approach aimed at teachers with little drama training in which pupils are cast as if they were skilled professionals facing an authentic problem, using that imagined expertise to drive inquiry across ordinary subjects such as history or science. Her methods were documented in Drama for Learning, written with Gavin Bolton in 1994, and in Betty Jane Wagner's earlier study of her practice, and they remain widely taught in drama-in-education and applied theatre courses. She was appointed MBE in 2011, shortly before her death, for services to drama as education.
