K. Anders Ericsson

Learning and Cognitive Theorists

K. Anders Ericsson (1947-2020) was a Swedish psychologist who spent his career studying how experts become expert. He completed his doctorate in Stockholm in 1976, then worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Herbert Simon at Carnegie Mellon University on verbal report methods for studying problem solving, and with William Chase on memory expertise. After posts at the University of Colorado and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education in Berlin, he joined Florida State University in 1992. His 1993 paper with Ralf Krampe and Clemens Tesch-Romer on the role of deliberate practice in acquiring expert performance became his most cited work and the basis of the deliberate practice idea used in teaching, music and sport training. With Neil Charness he also wrote a 1994 American Psychologist review of expert performance.
