Seymour Papert

Mathematician and computer scientist

Seymour Papert was a South African-born mathematician, computer scientist, and educator who spent much of his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he co-founded the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory with Marvin Minsky. Papert developed the Logo programming language to let children explore mathematical ideas through turtle graphics, and coined the term constructionism, a learning theory holding that people build understanding most effectively when constructing tangible, shareable products. His book Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas argued for using computers as tools for children's own exploration rather than instruments of instruction, shaping decades of educational technology practice.
