Conversation Theory

Social and Sociocultural Learning Theories

Conversation theory is a pedagogical, dialectical and cybernetic framework that examines conversation, cognition and learning between two conversational participants who are trying to establish what is meant by a topic during their exchange. Each participant works to converge toward a shared understanding of the topic's significance with the other, and the theory provides a formal dialectical framework for examining how the participants modulate each other's conceptualization of the topic as the conversation unfolds.

FAQs

What are serialists and holists in conversation theory?

Two learning strategies Pask identified: serialists go step by step, holists look for higher order relations.

Gordon Pask identified two learning strategies. Serialists progress through an entailment structure in a sequential fashion, while holists look for higher order relations. Pask used entailment structures to show what is to be learned and how its concepts relate to one another.
