Invitational education is a theory of educational practice that emphasizes the importance of internal knowledge in relation to a student's external connections to the outside world and to the educational system, with a central feature being that a student's positive self-concept, and the productivity that follows from it, should be developed through the school environment. Ideas related to invitational education were introduced by William Watson Purkey, professor emeritus of counselor education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with contributions from Betty Siegel, John Michael Novak and Peter Wong, together Purkey's co-founders of the International Alliance for Invitational Education; Novak and Wong were also primary contributors to developing the theory and practice, authoring numerous articles and books on the subject.
