Inclusion (education)

Critical, Moral and Equity-Oriented Theories

Inclusion, in education, is the practice of educating students with disabilities and other diverse learning needs alongside their peers in general education classrooms, rather than in separate special education settings, with the supports and accommodations they need provided within that shared environment. It grew out of disability rights advocacy and legislation from the late twentieth century onward and rests on the principle that most students benefit from learning in a common, less restrictive setting whenever possible. Full inclusion remains a debated model in special education policy, with disagreement over how much specialized, separate instruction some students still require to be adequately served. FAQs

Is inclusive education only about students with disabilities?

No. UNESCO describes it as removing every barrier to education, not only those facing students with disabilities.

No. Educating students with disabilities alongside their peers is the best known use of the term, but UNESCO describes a wider aim. It says millions of people are excluded from education for reasons that might include gender, sexual orientation, ethnic or social origin, language, religion, nationality, economic condition or ability. In UNESCO's words, inclusive education works to identify all barriers to education and remove them, and it covers everything from curricula to pedagogy and teaching.
