Flexible Seating Classrooms

Instructional Design and Curriculum Frameworks

A flexible seating classroom is one in which the traditional fixed seating chart is replaced by seating arrangements that let students choose where to sit. One of its principal objectives is to reduce the amount of time students spend sitting still, which research has identified as a health concern, and a number of studies have reported that physical movement rather than traditional seating benefits student learning. School systems such as Albemarle County Public Schools in Virginia have adopted the approach with reported success.
