Skillstreaming

Behaviorist and Cognitive Processing Theories

Skillstreaming is a social-skills training method that teaches desirable behaviors through active, structured learning rather than passive instruction. It was introduced in 1973 by the psychologist Arnold P. Goldstein, originally for low-income adults, and has since been adapted for adolescents, elementary and preschool children, and other groups including elderly adults and police officers. It is used widely in schools, agencies, and institutions serving children and youth in the United States and other countries, and it draws on behavioral theory, using modeling, rehearsal, and reinforcement, but from a psychoeducational rather than a strict operant-conditioning perspective. FAQs

How does Skillstreaming differ from approaches built on operant conditioning?

It is psychoeducational and skills-training based rather than centered on operant procedures.

Skillstreaming does not emphasize operant procedures such as prompting and shaping of behaviors. It takes a more psychoeducational approach, viewing the individual as a person in need of help in the form of skills training.
