Hermann Ebbinghaus

Learning and Cognitive Theorists

Hermann Ebbinghaus (1850 to 1909) was a German psychologist who pioneered the experimental study of memory. He is best known for discovering the forgetting curve and the spacing effect, and he was the first person to describe the learning curve. His work showed that memory and learning could be measured and studied under controlled conditions, and it still underlies research on how spacing study sessions over time supports retention. He was the father of the neo-Kantian philosopher Julius Ebbinghaus.
