Froebelian Education

Named Pedagogical Models and Movements

Froebelian education is the pedagogy developed by German educator Friedrich Froebel, founder of the kindergarten, built around structured play with a graded sequence of manipulative learning materials he called gifts, alongside songs, movement games and gardening, on the premise that a young child learns best through self-directed, symbolic play rather than direct instruction. Froebel's approach shaped the kindergarten movement as it spread internationally through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and remains a recognized influence on early-childhood classroom design today.
