Donald E. Super (1910-1994) was an American psychologist whose life-span, life-space theory reshaped how schools and colleges organize career guidance and vocational counseling. Rather than treating career choice as a single decision, Super modeled it as a lifelong developmental process unfolding across five stages, growth, exploration, establishment, maintenance and disengagement, each tied to age-related tasks such as forming self-understanding, testing tentative occupational interests and stabilizing in a role. Central to his theory is the idea that vocational choices express a person's evolving self-concept, so educators and counselors should help students explore and test that self-concept rather than simply matching them to jobs. He introduced the concept of career maturity, a student's readiness to make sound career decisions at a given developmental stage, which became a standard construct in school career-guidance programs and counselor training. Super taught at Columbia University's Teachers College and led the American Psychological Association's Division of Counseling Psychology.
