Outdoor and Adventure Education

Active and Experiential Learning Strategies

Outdoor and adventure education uses physically and often mildly risky outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, sailing, wilderness expeditions and ropes courses, as the vehicle for teaching skills such as teamwork, leadership, resilience and self-confidence that its practitioners argue transfer poorly from a conventional classroom. Kurt Hahn's Outward Bound, founded in 1941 to build resilience in young merchant sailors, is the movement's most influential single institution, and its programs and imitators now operate in secondary schools, youth organizations and corporate training worldwide.
