Bagrut

Assessment Practice

The Bagrut is Israel's matriculation certificate, awarded to secondary school students who pass a required combination of subject examinations set by the Ministry of Education, typically over the final two or three years of high school. A sufficient Bagrut, often combined with results from the Psychometric Entrance Test, is generally required for admission to Israeli universities, and the certificate can be earned across differing numbers of study units per subject, affecting its overall weighted grade.

FAQs

What does a student need to earn the Bagrut certificate?

At least 20 study units: 15 in required subjects plus a 5 unit elective.

According to the Jewish Virtual Library, drawing on the United States-Israel Education Foundation, a candidate must be tested in at least 20 study units. Fifteen of those units come from required subjects, and the candidate must also take at least one elective at the 5 unit level. The required subjects and their minimum unit levels are civics 1, Bible 2, Hebrew literature 2, Hebrew grammar 1, Hebrew composition 1, history 2, English 3 and mathematics 3. Each unit generally represents ninety class hours, and each subject score is the average of the school grade and the Ministry of Education final examination grade.
