The National Senior Certificate (NSC), commonly called matric, is South Africa's school-leaving qualification, awarded on completion of grade 12 and successful performance in a set of national examinations set by the Department of Basic Education. Introduced in 2008 to replace the previous Senior Certificate under the new outcomes-based curriculum, a National Senior Certificate with an appropriate endorsement is required for admission to South African universities.
