The Academies Programme is a policy under which state schools in England are funded directly by central government and operate independently of local authority control, typically run by non-profit academy trusts. Introduced in 2000 as a small initiative targeting underperforming schools in disadvantaged areas, the programme was substantially expanded by the Academies Act 2010, after which academy status became available to any school and a large share of England's secondary schools converted to it.
