Nonsectarian

Nonsectarian describes an institution or organization with no affiliation to a particular religious group. In education, nonsectarian schools operate independently of any religious denomination and enroll students regardless of faith background, in contrast to institutions with an explicit religious orientation or purpose. A number of North American universities, including Boston University, Cornell University, and Dalhousie University, identify as nonsectarian, as do many private primary and secondary schools. In the United States a 1956 amendment to Virginia's constitution allowed state tuition grants to flow to nonsectarian private schools, while Blaine amendments adopted in 38 state constitutions restrict government funding to institutions with religious affiliations, a restriction that in practice favors the nonsectarian model. The US Department of Education classifies schools as nonsectarian when they carry no religious orientation, as distinct from Catholic, Conservative Christian, or other religiously affiliated designations.
