Indigenous Land-Based Pedagogy

Equity and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Indigenous land-based pedagogy is an approach, documented among Indigenous peoples across North America, Australia and elsewhere, that situates learning directly on the land through activities such as hunting, gathering, seasonal travel and ceremony, treating the land itself, and the relationships and stories attached to particular places, as a primary teacher rather than a setting in which lessons could equally happen. Contemporary Indigenous-led schools and land-based education programs, expanding since the late twentieth century as part of broader Indigenous education-sovereignty movements, draw explicitly on this older practice rather than reconstructing it from outside sources.
