The Erasmus Programme is a European Union student exchange initiative, launched in 1987 and named after the Renaissance humanist Desiderius Erasmus, that funds university students to study or train for a period in another participating country. It has since expanded well beyond its original higher-education focus, folded into the broader Erasmus+ program from 2014 to also cover school education, vocational training, adult education and youth exchange, and has supported many millions of participants since its founding, becoming one of the EU's best-known and most visible policy achievements.
