European School

A European School is a type of international school offering a multilingual and multicultural education from nursery through secondary level, culminating in the European Baccalaureate. The system was created to educate the children of staff working for European Union institutions, and each school is set up, financed, and operated by the international organization known as the European Schools, jointly controlled by EU member states and the European Commission. The first European School opened in Luxembourg in 1953 to serve children of employees of the European Coal and Steel Community, the EU's forerunner, and the idea drew the attention of Jean Monnet, a founding figure of European integration, who saw it as embodying the post-war spirit of reconciling and integrating Europe. As of September 2017 there were thirteen European Schools operating across six EU member states, generally located near EU institutions, and since 2005 nationally run schools have also been able to apply for Accredited European School status if approved to teach the European Schools curriculum and the European Baccalaureate.
