Definitions of Education

Definitions of education are the many proposed accounts of what education essentially is; there is wide agreement that education involves transmitting knowledge, but deep disagreement over its exact nature. Some definitions treat education as a process exemplified by schooling, teaching and learning, while others treat it instead as the product of that process, meaning what characterizes an educated person, and attempts to state precise necessary and sufficient conditions have repeatedly run into counterexamples. A further debate concerns whether definitions of education should be value-neutral, thin definitions, or should build in an evaluative claim that the person educated has changed for the better, thick definitions, with descriptive accounts trying to capture how the word is actually used and prescriptive accounts stipulating what education should be.
