Liberal education

Liberal education is an approach to higher and general education that aims to develop a broad base of knowledge across the humanities, sciences, and arts along with skills such as critical thinking, communication, and reasoning, in contrast to narrowly vocational or professional training focused on a single career path. Rooted in the classical liberal arts tradition of the trivium and quadrivium, it holds that a well-rounded education prepares a person for engaged citizenship and lifelong learning rather than for one specific job. The model remains the organizing philosophy behind liberal arts colleges and general education requirements at many universities, even as it faces ongoing debate over its cost and career relevance compared with more specialized degree programs.
