J. Schuyler Long

Joseph Schuyler Long (1869 to October 31, 1933) was an American educator, author and school principal who became deaf as a child and went on to teach deaf children for most of his career. He is best known for authoring the first standard picture dictionary of American Sign Language, an illustrated manual of signs later described as the deaf community's equivalent of Webster's Dictionary. Long worked as a teacher and administrator at schools for deaf students throughout his career and also published a poetry collection, Out of the Silence, drawing on his own experience of deafness.
