Licentiate

The licentiate, from the Latin licentia meaning permission, is an academic degree awarded by universities in many countries, though what it represents varies considerably by region and field, from an intermediate postgraduate qualification in parts of Europe to a full professional degree elsewhere. It traces to the licentia docendi of the twelfth century, a formal licence to teach granted under papal authority, and today the degree is still used across theology, canon law, philosophy, medicine, engineering and the sciences, typically requiring two to four years of postgraduate study.
