The University of Sao Paulo (USP) is a public research university in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo and the largest public university in Brazil. Founded on 25 January 1934 by regrouping existing schools such as the Law School, the Polytechnic School and the College of Agriculture, its foundation was marked by the creation of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Literature; it now operates eleven campuses, four in the city of Sao Paulo and others in Bauru, Lorena, Piracicaba, Pirassununga, Ribeirao Preto and two in Sao Carlos. USP alumni and faculty include 13 former or sitting Brazilian presidents and members of the National Congress, and the university produces more than 25 percent of the scientific papers published by Brazilian researchers in high-quality conferences and journals.
