Why was the University of São Paulo founded in 1934?

It followed the state's defeat in the Constitutionalist Revolution and was part of a push for modern institutions.

The state of São Paulo needed institutional improvements after its defeat in the Constitutionalist Revolution. In 1934 the state's intervenor, Armando de Sales Oliveira, founded the university as one of the efforts to give Brazil modern administrative, educational and military institutions. Its nucleus was the new School of Philosophy, Sciences and Languages, with professors from France, Italy, Spain, Germany and other European countries, joined with older schools such as the Law School and the Polytechnic School.
