The London School of Economics and Political Science, known as LSE, is a public research university in central London, founded in 1895 by Fabian Society members Sidney Webb, Beatrice Webb, Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw, funded initially by a bequest of 20,000 pounds from Henry Hunt Hutchinson's estate. Long a member institution of the federal University of London, it has held university status in its own right since 2022, and it specializes in the pure and applied social sciences, particularly economics and political science. LSE enrolls about 13,000 students, most of them postgraduate and international, holds the sixth-largest endowment among UK universities, and has educated 24 prime ministers or presidents since 1990.
