The University of Leeds is a public research university in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, with roots in the Leeds School of Medicine, founded in 1831, and the Yorkshire College of Science, established in 1874, which merged with the medical school in 1884; the combined college joined the federal Victoria University in 1887 before receiving its own royal charter from King Edward VII in 1904. It is the tenth-largest UK university by enrollment and, with more than 68,000 undergraduate applications a year, the fourth-most popular UK university by application volume, and it is a member of the Russell Group. Its alumni include the current UK prime minister Keir Starmer and several Nobel laureates.
