The University of Manchester is a public research university in Manchester, England, formed in 2004 by the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester, with roots reaching back to the Manchester Mechanics' Institution of 1824 and to Owens College, founded in 1851. It is a red brick university that grew out of the civic university movement of the late 19th century, and it is the third-largest UK university by enrollment, with about 46,305 students, and the most applied-to UK university, drawing over 92,000 undergraduate applications a year. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities and is associated with 26 Nobel laureates among its past and present students and staff.
