German educator who studied under Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi before founding, in 1837, the first kindergarten, a children's garden for three- and four-year-olds built on play, self-activity and a graded sequence of manipulative gifts. Prussia banned kindergartens the year after his death, but the model spread to Britain, the United States and beyond.
