Swiss educational reformer who worked to educate poor and orphaned children and, from 1805 to 1825, directed the Yverdon Institute, which drew pupils and educators (including Friedrich Froebel) from across Europe. His insistence on concrete, sense-based instruction responsive to the individual child laid much of the groundwork for modern elementary education.
