A higher education institution located in China, Japan, South Korea or Hong Kong, gathered under the UN geoscheme's Eastern Asia region. This group includes several of the oldest and most research-intensive national universities in the region, among them former Imperial universities in Japan and universities affiliated with national academies of science in China. It is kept distinct from South and Southeast Asia, the geoscheme's neighboring region immediately to the south and southwest, so the two culturally and historically distinct higher education traditions are not folded into one oversized bucket.
