University of Campinas

The University of Campinas, commonly called Unicamp (Universidade Estadual de Campinas), is a public research university in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Established in 1962, it was designed from scratch as an integrated research center rather than through consolidation of existing schools, and nearly half of its students are graduate students, the largest such proportion among Brazil's large universities, with 153 graduate programs against 70 undergraduate ones. Its main campus occupies 3.5 square kilometres in the district of Barao Geraldo near Campinas, with satellite campuses in Limeira, Piracicaba and Paulinia; the university accounts for around 15 percent of Brazilian research output and produces more patents than any other Brazilian research organization apart from the state oil company Petrobras.
