The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen (LMU Munich), also known as the University of Munich, is a public research university in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Originally established as the University of Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut, it is Germany's sixth-oldest university in continuous operation, later moved to Landshut in 1800 and to its present Munich location in 1826, taking its current name in 1802 in honor of King Maximilian I and Ludwig IX. LMU is the second-largest university in Germany by student population, with 52,658 matriculated students in the 2025/26 winter semester across 18 faculties. As of 2023 it is associated with 50 Nobel laureates.
