UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is the UN specialized agency created after the Second World War to build peace through cooperation in education, science and culture. Its constitution, signed in London on 16 November 1945 by 41 states and in force from 4 November 1946, commits it to advancing equal educational opportunity without regard to race, sex or any distinction; its education work today spans literacy campaigns, standard setting and the global Education 2030 agenda. It has no individual founder, being the creation of a multilateral conference.

UNESCO's constitution says peace must be built in people's minds and gives the organization the purpose of promoting peace through education, science and culture.
The preamble of the UNESCO constitution declares that since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed. It adds that ignorance of each other's ways and lives has been a common cause, throughout the history of mankind, of suspicion between peoples. Article I then sets the purpose of the organization as contributing to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science and culture.
