Carden Method

The Carden Method is an educational program created by Mae Carden, in response to what she saw as problems with progressive education, and used today in roughly 80 independent, mostly nonsectarian K-8 schools across the United States. The first Carden school opened in New York City in 1934, and Carden went on to found the Carden Educational Foundation, which keeps the methods teaching materials in use. The curriculum covers mathematics, language arts, science, history and geography together with art, music and foreign languages, and it builds concepts up over time instead of dropping them once they are first taught. It is especially known for close attention to language instruction, including sentence analysis and a spelling system called Carden Controls, a set of rules for breaking a word down into its basic phonic parts. Educators have given it mixed reviews, praising the thoroughness of its language teaching while criticizing it as rigid and, in places, out of step with modern grammar and everyday usage.
