History of the English Language (Education)

History of the English language, often abbreviated HEL, is a course commonly required of students in English studies and education programs, tracing the development of English from Old English through to its modern form. It became a standard requirement in American colleges during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and remains part of many English curricula today, frequently serving as the only linguistics course such students take. The subject combines foundational linguistic concepts with the historical stages of the language, and its place in the curriculum, its textbooks, and whether it still deserves the emphasis it has traditionally received are matters of ongoing discussion in both higher education and secondary schooling.
