Marte Meo

Marte Meo, a name taken from Latin meaning by ones own power, is an educational and therapeutic counseling method developed by Dutch educational counselor Maria Aarts in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Aarts founded the Marte Meo organization in 1987 to train counselors in the method. It works by video recording ordinary interactions between a child and an educator or parent, then reviewing the footage together so that everyone involved can see what is working and what is not, and build solutions from that. The method is used in the Netherlands, the Scandinavian countries, France, Ireland and India, where it is regarded as an effective, low cost and practical approach, though some therapeutic professionals in the United States consider it less practical than other methods available there.
