School Organizational Models

Instructional Design and Curriculum Frameworks

School organizational models are ways of structuring the curriculum, functions, and facilities of schools, colleges, and universities. As specialization grew, instructors clustered into subject groups, schools, and departments, a structure that spread widely in the 19th and 20th centuries alongside factory-model schools built on assembly-line style standardized instruction; beginning with the progressive education movement of the early twentieth century, and again more recently, alternative models aimed at deeper learning and 21st-century skills emerged, including departmental, integrative, project-based, academy, small learning community, and school-within-a-school structures.
