Lightner Witmer

Lightner Witmer (June 28, 1867 to July 19, 1956) was an American psychologist credited with introducing the term clinical psychology and founding the field it describes. In 1896 he established what is considered the world's first psychological clinic, at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1907 he founded the first clinical hospital school. Witmer also launched the first journal devoted to clinical psychology. Beyond his clinical work, he made lasting contributions to school psychology and special education, applying psychological assessment directly to children's learning difficulties in the classroom.
