Classical Education

Named Pedagogical Models and Movements

Classical education is a curriculum model, revived in the mid-twentieth century by writer Dorothy Sayers's 1947 essay The Lost Tools of Learning and expanded into the classical-school and classical-homeschooling movements from the 1980s onward, that stages instruction through the medieval trivium: a grammar stage of memorization and foundational facts in the early years, a logic stage of structured argument and reasoning in early adolescence, and a rhetoric stage of persuasive writing and speech in the later teens, built around primary texts read in a roughly chronological sequence.
