What did the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements replace?
One subject policy document replaced three separate sets of guidance.
South Africa's Department of Basic Education describes a Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement as a single, comprehensive and concise policy document for a subject. It replaced the earlier Subject and Learning Area Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines and Subject Assessment Guidelines for all the subjects listed in the National Curriculum Statement Grades R to 12. Teachers therefore work from one document per subject instead of three separate sets of guidance.
What does the National Curriculum Statement Grades R to 12 consist of?
It combines the subject policy statements with promotion requirements and an assessment protocol.
According to the Department of Basic Education, the National Curriculum Statement Grades R to 12 is the policy statement for learning and teaching in South African schools. It comprises the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements for each approved school subject, the national policy on programme and promotion requirements, which sets the number of subjects learners take in each grade and the promotion requirements, and the National Protocol for Assessment Grades R to 12, which standardises recording and reporting.
