K to 12 Basic Education Program

State Standards Initiative

The Philippines' basic education reform, enacted through the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, extending the country's basic education cycle from ten to thirteen years by adding a mandatory kindergarten year and two years of senior high school, and aligning the system with the twelve-year cycle common internationally. It introduced tracks in senior high school (academic, technical-vocational-livelihood, sports and arts) allowing students to specialize before graduation, and was phased in gradually from 2012, with the first senior-high cohort graduating in 2018.

FAQs

What are the stages of schooling under the K to 12 Basic Education Program?

One year of kindergarten, six of elementary and six of secondary school (four junior high and two senior high).

Under Republic Act No. 10533, basic education in the Philippines runs in sequence from one year of kindergarten to six years of elementary education and then six years of secondary education. The secondary stage is split into four years of junior high school and two years of senior high school. The law defines kindergarten as one year of preparatory education for children at least five years old, and it is a prerequisite for entry to Grade 1. Adding those stages together gives thirteen years of basic education.
