A bar examination is the licensing test a jurisdiction's bar association or legal regulator requires a prospective lawyer to pass before being formally admitted to practise law there. Formats and difficulty vary enormously by country, ranging from multiple choice tests to lengthy essay and practical components, and pass rates swing from as low as six percent in Japan to far higher figures elsewhere. Nearly every jurisdiction requires candidates to first complete a recognised law degree, and many add a further period of supervised practical training before the examination itself may be sat.
