The Juris Doctor, abbreviated JD, is the standard professional law degree in the United States and the Philippines, where it is the primary qualifying credential for legal practice. The University of Chicago Law School first conferred the degree in 1902, and it now typically takes three years of full-time study covering constitutional law, civil procedure, criminal law, contracts, property and torts. Graduates must still pass a jurisdiction's bar examination before they are licensed to practise law.
