CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

CELTA is the initial teacher training qualification for teaching English as a foreign or second language, awarded by Cambridge Assessment English through authorised training centres worldwide. It traces to a course first developed at International House London in 1962 and was formalised under its current structure in 1988, requiring a minimum of one hundred and twenty contact hours plus eighty hours of independent study, six hours of assessed teaching practice and four written assignments. Over three hundred authorised centres across more than sixty countries run roughly eight hundred and fifty CELTA courses a year, offered full time over four to five weeks or part time across several months.
