Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education, or PGCE, is the standard postgraduate teacher training qualification in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and South Africa, typically completed in a single year of full-time study following a bachelor's degree, though part-time routes can extend to two years and South African programmes to three. Successful graduates in England and Wales receive Qualified Teacher Status alongside the PGCE itself, which together qualify them to teach in state maintained schools; the course combines university-based instruction with supervised practical placements in schools.
