The Bachelor of Science, abbreviated BSc or BS, is an undergraduate degree awarded on completion of a scientific or technical programme of study. The University of London was the first institution to formally confer the degree, in 1860, though American schools such as the Lawrence Scientific School had already been awarding an equivalent credential from 1851. Whether a given subject leads to a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts still varies by university and by country, with some institutions awarding a BSc across every discipline and others reserving the Bachelor of Arts even for science subjects.
