Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

Also Known As OECD
Education Governance and System Bodies

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is an intergovernmental organisation founded in 1961, succeeding the 1948 Organisation for European Economic Co-operation, to stimulate economic progress and world trade among its members. Headquartered in Paris, France, its 38 member countries are highly developed economies that together represent well over half of world nominal GDP. In education the OECD is best known for administering the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which compares educational outcomes across member and partner countries and has become a widely cited benchmark in national education-policy debates.

FAQs

What does the OECD's PISA assessment actually measure?

PISA measures how well 15-year-olds can apply reading, mathematics and science knowledge to real-life challenges.

According to the OECD, PISA is its Programme for International Student Assessment. It measures the ability of 15-year-olds to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. It therefore tests how well students can apply what they have learned, and the students it covers are of one age rather than of one school grade.
